THE QUESTION:
WHO WAS THE GOD OF
THE OLD TESTAMENT?
Was it God the Father, or was it Jesus?
There is ample evidence that at least until the time of Jesus,
Israelites knew of only one God—the God of the Old Testament.
We may safely presume that Peter, filled with the spirit after the day of
Pentecost, can be trusted to have spoken the truth, without confusion. Below are
four passages spoken by Peter:
Act 2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
Act 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
Act 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
Question: Who does "God" refer to in this passage? Be specific.
Act 3:13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of
Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered
up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let
him go.
Act 3:14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;
Act 3:15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
Question: Who was "the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our
fathers"?
Be specific (What is his name?).
Question: Who was the ONLY God that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob knew of and communicated with?
Act 4:24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their
voice to God with one accord, and said,
Lord, thou art God, which
hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
Act 4:25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
Act 4:26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
Act 4:27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
Question: Who was the Creator God that made heaven, earth, and
sea?
Act 5:30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye
slew and hanged on a tree.
Question: Who was "the God of our fathers"? Be specific.
Question: If Jesus was the God of the Old Testament, then he was the Creator, the God of our fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. How can these four passages from Acts be reconciled with this understanding, when each of them defines the God of the Old Testament as someone distinct from Jesus?
